David was born at Torrejon Air Force Base, Madrid, Spain to Louis and Katherine Wagner. He was the fifth of seven children. He graduated from Marist High School in Eugene, Ore. in 1983 and attended the University of Oregon majoring in Biology.
David moved to Portland, Ore. in 1987 and began a career in printing and publishing. The last 17 years, he worked for Morel Ink as a customer service representative and later as special projects manager.
David was an excellent athlete. He was a champion swimmer and loved playing softball in many leagues. David was a voracious reader and prided himself on building a home library of some note. David also loved to travel; he cherished a family vacation in Ireland and had over 20 trips to Hawaii. He and his partner had a home under construction on the island Kauai in Hawaii. David was an avid mushroom hunter and spent many springs hunting morel mushrooms on the Pacific Crest Trail.
David was an active member of the community and supported many charities. He is survived by his parents, Louis and Katherine (Westendick) Wagner of Tallahassee, Fla. Siblings include: Donna (Wagner) Nelson and the late Stanley Nelson of Sacramento, Calif.; Christopher Wagner and Mary Wagner of Anaheim, Calif.; Theresa (Wagner) Tremaine and Marty Tremaine of Eugene, Ore.; Matthew Wagner of Tallahassee, Fla.; Ann (Wagner) Arp and Jamie Arp of Portland, Ore.; Karen (Wagner) Murphy Colosetti and Isham Colosetti of Woodstock, Ga. Nieces and nephews include: Brian and Bill Tremaine, Kate, Jack and James Arp and Erin Murphy. He is survived by his beloved cat, Hamilton and partner of 21 years Bill Dickey.
